Good to Know: Domingos Alves de Sousa and his father Edmundo and grandfather had been winemakers in Duoro as a family tradition. Domingos, having graduated Civil Engineer, had first abandoned the tradition in 1987 as he carried out a model work of land consolidation and restructuring of the vineyard. The wine growing activity has evolved and become more interesting. A turning point in 1988, affected by recession, where wine growers were struggling. It required technical and professional training. Domingos then attended courses so he may learn the ways of viticulture and oenology which helped him restructure the vineyards to become his very own producer-bottler. He built a winery in Quita Gaivosa where he vinified the production from remaining farms.
Despite his newfound passion for table wines, Domingos's connection to Porto and expertise in producing Port wines remains steadfast. In the Quinta da Gaivosa winery, where he has conducted thorough research and experiments over the years, a number of exceptional Ports have been created. These endeavors have allowed him to explore and showcase the full potential of his family's vineyards across various categories of Port wines. Today, the legacy of the Alves de Sousa family continues to thrive, anchored in their deep roots in the shale lands of the Douro region.
The Alves de Sousa Quinta da Gaivosa Porto White 10 Year Old has the color of amber. This beverage is highly intricate, containing a rich blend of herbal, spicy, and citrusy notes, complemented by hints of maple syrup and almonds. Aged to perfection, it boasts a full-bodied and refined taste, with additional layers of marmalade, caramel, and dried fruit nuances.
Best paired with Blue cheeses (Roquefort, Stilton), apple and apricot desserts

Kat WynnTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Great wine bar. They offer a wide selection of wine & the tapas are delicious. I didn't think I'd enjoy bread with olive oil as much as I did! Gambas, patè & croquettes were also delicious. We went at around 2pm and it was quiet - we just wanted something light and available. I believe they offer a variety of meats that has to be pre ordered? We would love to come back. Also, very good service. Peter LacTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Txanton offers a focused and authentic take on Spanish dining, grounded in its role as a jamonería and its clear respect for quality produce and tradition. At the heart of the menu is the jamón. The jamón tasting menu is particularly impressive, presenting six different varieties that span the full spectrum of cured ham, each one expertly prepared and deeply flavourful. The supporting dishes are equally strong, including excellent gambas al ajillo (garlic shrimps), a rich and comforting arroz cremoso con frutos de mar (seafood creamy rice), and bold chorizo picante a la brasa (spicy chorizo) with smoky depth. Dessert is distinctive and well judged, with the crema de queso (cream cheese) paired beautifully with PX wine, raisins, and a Tempranillo cookie. Service is relaxed and courteous, with staff providing thoughtful recommendations and attentive care throughout. The setting is welcoming and unpretentious, echoing the atmosphere of a traditional Spanish dining room - ideal for sharing plates, conversation, and good wine. Txanton succeeds in delivering a genuine Spanish experience, excelling in its jamón while offering a consistently well-executed menu.
