Good to Know: Chateau Haut Brion is the oldest amongst the Bordeaux 1st Growths. It's vineyards, being one of the oldest in the region, were established around the 1530's. There is also historical evidence that shows King Charles II, Thomas Jefferson, and renowned London diarist Samuel Pepys as some of the few notable people in history to have enjoyed Chateau Haut Brion back in the day. Apart from its historical significance, Chateau Haut Brion is also notable for being the only 1st Growth in the Graves sub region of Bordeaux.
Acquired in 1935 by American francophile, Clarence Dillon, Chateau Haut Brion has been managed and led by the Dillon family ever since. Apart from its flagship red wine, Haut Brion also has a white wine under the same name as well as a second wine known as La Clarence de Haut Brion which was first released under this name in 2007. In the early 1980's, the Dillon family acquired a property flanking Chateau Haut Brion and renamed it to La Mission de Haut Brion which also produces its own respectable line of wines as well. Today, the Dillon family currently owns and operates several vineyards in the region one of its most famous ones goes by the name, Quintus.
Upon initial observation, one cannot help but notice the subtle, yet refined color of this wine. However, it is the intricate aromas that truly captivate the senses. The aromatic intensity is truly remarkable. As you take a sip, the dominance of the cabernet grape is undeniable. The tannins are sturdy, robust, and still evolving within the overall profile of the wine. This is a wine that demands patience. The powerful tannins and rich aromas are present, yet they have yet to fully harmonize. This is a classic wine from an exceptional year for Cabernets, a true gem that is worth waiting for.
The weather conditions for making Chateau La Mission Haut Brion in 1996 were marked by significant irregularity. Apart from a few hot days in July, there were no prolonged periods of high temperatures. Rainfall started later than usual in August, and the first half of September was mild. However, the second half of September experienced constant rain. Overall, the summer was deemed average with some pleasant intervals.

Kat WynnTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Great wine bar. They offer a wide selection of wine & the tapas are delicious. I didn't think I'd enjoy bread with olive oil as much as I did! Gambas, patè & croquettes were also delicious. We went at around 2pm and it was quiet - we just wanted something light and available. I believe they offer a variety of meats that has to be pre ordered? We would love to come back. Also, very good service. Peter LacTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Txanton offers a focused and authentic take on Spanish dining, grounded in its role as a jamonería and its clear respect for quality produce and tradition. At the heart of the menu is the jamón. The jamón tasting menu is particularly impressive, presenting six different varieties that span the full spectrum of cured ham, each one expertly prepared and deeply flavourful. The supporting dishes are equally strong, including excellent gambas al ajillo (garlic shrimps), a rich and comforting arroz cremoso con frutos de mar (seafood creamy rice), and bold chorizo picante a la brasa (spicy chorizo) with smoky depth. Dessert is distinctive and well judged, with the crema de queso (cream cheese) paired beautifully with PX wine, raisins, and a Tempranillo cookie. Service is relaxed and courteous, with staff providing thoughtful recommendations and attentive care throughout. The setting is welcoming and unpretentious, echoing the atmosphere of a traditional Spanish dining room - ideal for sharing plates, conversation, and good wine. Txanton succeeds in delivering a genuine Spanish experience, excelling in its jamón while offering a consistently well-executed menu.
