Good To Know: El Puntido comes from old Spanish which translates to "staircase landing." The term picturesquely describes the topography of the land between the Sierra de Cantabria and the Ebro River. Vinedo de Paganos' El Puntido wines have been in production since 2001 and have increased in quality after each and every vintage primarily due to their focus on lowering yields over the last 12 years. The winery was founded with the goal of highlighting "El Puntido" and "La Nieta," two phenomenal single vineyards, located in the ancient medieval town of Páganos and near the village of Laguardia in Basque Country's Rioja Alavesa sub region.
Sierra Cantabria Viñedos de Páganos El Puntido Gran Reserva 2014 is a phenomenal, terroir-driven expression of 100% Tempranillo crafted by the legendary Marcos Eguren from a single, high-altitude vineyard in Rioja Alavesa. What makes the 2014 vintage so exceptionally significant is its triumph over adversity; despite a notoriously challenging, cooler growing season marked by unexpected pre-harvest rain, the vineyard's sloped, well-draining calcareous-clay soils and the estate's rigorous grape selection yielded fruit of astonishing quality. The result is a wine of incredible vibrancy, striking acidity, and elegance that perfectly counterbalances the deep, muscular concentration expected of a Gran Reserva. Meticulously aged for 28 months in new French oak barrels, this 2014 masterpiece delivers profound aromas of dark plum, espresso, and bitter chocolate, intricately woven with subtle notes of cracked black pepper, liquorice, and Cuban cigar. Framed by velvety tannins, a distinct mineral freshness, and remarkable cellaring potential, this highly acclaimed release stands as a brilliant testament to the Eguren family's mastery over the Rioja landscape.
Vinedo de Paganos was founded by the Eguren family and is just one of the amazing wineries under the main company, Sierra Cantabria, which was originally founded in 1870 (previously known as Bodegas Eguren.) Apart from Vinedo de Paganos, the company also owns renowned wineries such as Senorio de San Vicente, Teso La Monja and Dominio de Eguren. The company today is led by a 4th generationEguren and one of Spain's most celebrated winemakers, Marcus Eguren.
