The estate rose from humble beginnings when Pierre arrived in the region with little capital, initially buying and vinifying grapes before acquiring his first Premier Cru parcel, Les Ruchottes, in 1934. The estate went on to make history by shipping some of the very first estate-bottled Burgundies to the United States following the repeal of Prohibition. The defining moment for the estate came in 1978 with the cash purchase of a legendary plot in Le Montrachet Grand Cru, a milestone that permanently secured its position alongside the world's most elite wine producers.
