Good to Know: Nestled in the heart of Castilla y León, Abadía Retuerta is a historic Spanish estate where winemaking tradition meets modern innovation. Established in a restored 12th-century monastery, the winery lies just outside the Ribera del Duero appellation, allowing it the freedom to craft exceptional “Vino de Pago de Sardon del Duero” wines. Its 700-hectare estate is home to meticulously managed vineyards planted with Tempranillo alongside Bordeaux varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Merlot, producing wines of remarkable depth and character.
The 2021 vintage stands out for Abadía Retuerta as a classic, benchmark year in the Duero Valley, marked by balanced climatic conditions that yielded exceptional freshness and structural integrity. After an eventful winter—highlighted by Storm Filomena's heavy snow cover providing deep soil hydration—a warm, steady summer permitted slow, full phenolic maturation without heat stress. The 2021 blend (predominantly Tempranillo, balanced with Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah) showcases remarkable balance between vibrant natural acidity, concentrated fruit, and fine-grained tannins. Aged for roughly 16 to 18 months in French and American oak, this release reinforces the estate’s status as an iconic non-D.O. powerhouse, delivering both immediate elegance and long-term aging potential.
On the nose, the 2021 Selección Especial opens with concentrated ripe blackberry, red plum, and dark cherry notes, layered over delicate floral undertones, eucalyptus, cedar, and subtle toasted oak nuances like vanilla and sweet spices. The palate is medium-to-full-bodied, fresh, and expressive, boasting polished tannins, balanced acidity, and a long, envelopingly smooth finish. To complement its savory depth and structural brightness, pair this wine with roasted rack of lamb, pan-seared ribeye, cured Manchego cheese, or a rich wild mushroom risotto.
