Good To Know: Teso La Monja was founded by Sierra Cantabria's Eguren family soon after the establishment of the now famous Bodegas Numanthia in Toro. Their goal was to revive and promote one of Spain's most under the radar wine regions, Toro, as well as to harness the full potential of Tempranillo's original clone which has remained unharmed during the phylloxera wave and remains on ungrafted vines.

Sierra Cantabria Teso La Monja Almirez 2021 is an intensely powerful yet remarkably refined expression of 100% Tinta de Toro (Tempranillo) crafted by the visionary Eguren family. Sourced from high-altitude, ungrafted vines ranging from 15 to 65 years old, this cuvée captures the raw, concentrated essence of the Toro appellation. The 2021 vintage is particularly significant for its exceptional balance and nuance; favorable weather patterns yielded grapes with perfect phenolic ripeness, allowing the wine to retain a vibrant fluidity that beautifully counters its signature muscularity. Aged for 14 months in French oak, the 2021 Almirez delivers profound aromas of dark plum, black cherry, dried lavender, and subtle licorice, backed by complex notes of cedar and earthy undergrowth. Framed by round, well-integrated tannins and a juicy, lingering finish, this highly acclaimed vintage is a masterclass in Toro winemaking, offering outstanding depth, elegance, and serious cellaring potential.
