Good To Know: Pintia was another secret project of the world renowned winery, Vega Sicilia. Their goal was to set the bar for wines produced in the region, focusing primarily on eliminating the stigma of Tinta de Toro (a think skinned clone of Tempranillo) being an "all power, no finesse" wine, and elevating its aromatic purity and elegance, creating a unique style that would set the benchmark for contemporary wines in the region.

Vega Sicilia purchased the plots for Pintia secretly around 1997 and began experimenting and improving both their vineyard practices and their vinification methods. They released their first vintage of Pintia in 2001 and received critical acclaim and praise from critics and collectors alike. Today, Pintia has become known for having the style and class of a Vega Sicilia Group wine, but with the extra spicy, forceful presence that can only be found from the unique terroir of Toro.

The 2021 Pintia stands out as one of the finest and most complete releases in the estate’s history, showcasing a remarkably cool, elegant expression of D.O. Toro. Crafted from 100% Tinta de Toro (Tempranillo) grown at 700 meters altitude on rocky, gravel-laden soils, the 2021 growing season benefited from moderate summer temperatures and three timely September rainfalls. This allowed the late-harvested fruit to achieve slow, flawless phenolic maturity while preserving exceptional natural acidity and avoiding the overripeness often associated with the region. Aged for roughly 11 months in oak barrels (predominantly new French and American oak) and large vats, the 2021 release successfully tames Toro’s signature muscle and density into a wine of remarkable freshness, precision, and long-term aging potential.

On the nose, the 2021 Pintia opens with an intense, expressive bouquet of wild blackberries, dark blueberries, and cassis, interwoven with floral violets, dark minerals, graphite, cocoa powder, and roasted spice. The palate is full-bodied, compact, and deeply layered, balanced by tight yet fine-grained, polished tannins and a vibrant line of acidity that lingers into a long, savory finish. To complement its structural power and refined energy, pair this wine with charcoal-grilled prime ribeye, braised lamb shanks, wild boar or game ragù, pan-seared secreto ibérico, or aged hard cheeses like cured Manchego.
