Good to Know: Laurent Ponsot is a fourth-generation Burgundian winemaker who, after over 35 years leading his family's famed domaine in Morey-Saint-Denis, established his own estate in 2015 in Gilly-lès-Cîteaux alongside his son Clément. His new venture blends estate-grown fruit with a high-end négociant model, sourcing from trusted growers across 26 appellations to craft a broad portfolio of village, Premier Cru, and Grand Cru wines. Guided by a philosophy of minimal intervention and terroir transparency, Ponsot avoids chemicals, new oak, and heavy sulfur, while embracing cutting-edge innovations like NFC capsules, oxygen-sensitive closures, and temperature-tracking shipping cases. Known for both his precision and integrity—famously helping expose the Rudy Kurniawan wine fraud—Laurent Ponsot today stands as a leader in marrying Burgundian tradition with forward-thinking technology to produce wines of remarkable purity, elegance, and authenticity.

The Charmes-Chambertin wine presents itself in a striking, bright red hue, reminiscent of a ripe cherry in its prime. Its aroma is a bouquet of flavors, from the sweet berry undertones of raspberry and blackcurrant, to the tart, refreshing hints of redcurrant. Adding a sense of depth and complexity, there is also the scent of stone, vibrant spices, and the distinctive aroma of liquorice. Floral and natural notes such as rose, violet, moss, and undergrowth further enhance the richness of its scent profile.

Tasting this wine is an experience of power, opulence, and elegance that fuses to create a robust and intricate body, overflowing with zest and sensuous richness. This is a wine designed for aging, showing its full potential after at least a decade of maturation.

The Charmes-Chambertin is a symbol of superior quality wine, manifesting in its virile, complex, and intense character. It demands the accompaniment of equally complex dishes to maintain a balanced pairing. This is a wine that pairs excellently with game, whether grilled or even better, served with a wine sauce.

In Burgundy, the term “Charmes” refers to a wasteland, used in the context of a “thatch” hosting a sparse population of hornbeam groves. These petite, rustic trees produce solid wood, ideally suited for providing warmth.

Laurent Ponsot’s Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru “Cuvée du Cyprès” 2022 is a powerful yet refined Pinot Noir, hailing from one of Burgundy’s most prestigious sites. Presenting a vivid deep ruby to black-cherry color, it opens with aromas of strawberry, blackcurrant, gooseberry, licorice, and spice, underscored by violet, moss, and forest-floor notes (euwine.wine). On the palate, the wine combines opulence and elegance, displaying a full, sap-laden texture with impressive structure—Burghound described the 2020 vintage (a solid point of reference) as “fresh and bright with excellent depth and persistence” and noted that 2022 will likely follow a similar trajectory (bestofwines.com). Widely recognized for its aging potential, this Grand Cru is expected to cellar beautifully for at least a decade, making it a stellar example of haute couture Pinot Noir.
