Good To Know: As one of the most iconic and globally renowned Spanish wine producers, the Eguren family, owns several notable wineries throughout all of Spain. Their most popular and arguably most iconic winery, Sierra Cantabria is located in the heart of the town of San Vicente de la Sonsierra in Rioja Alta, and makes a range of classic Rioja wines from 19 vineyard sites spread out across a total of 65 hectares (160 acres).
Sierra Cantabria Amancio 2021 is a profound, single-vineyard masterpiece crafted by the renowned Eguren family, representing the absolute pinnacle of modern Rioja. The 2021 vintage is widely celebrated as one of the most exceptional and harmonious years in recent Rioja history; a cooler, prolonged growing season allowed the Tempranillo grapes to achieve perfect phenolic ripeness while retaining a brilliant, vibrant acidity. Sourced exclusively from the prestigious La Veguilla estate, the fruit undergoes an incredibly rigorous selection process where grapes are meticulously hand-destemmed one by one. Fermented and aged for 24 months in new French oak barrels, this monumental wine delivers an opulent symphony of ripe black plum, dark cherry, crushed graphite, and elegant toasted spices. Bottled in the magnificent 1.5-liter magnum format—which significantly slows the oxidation process to allow for superior, graceful maturation—the flawlessly structured 2021 Amancio is a highly collectible gem destined to evolve beautifully in the cellar for decades.
Officially founded in 1870 by the prominent winemaking Eguren family, Sierra Cantabria is now led by fourth generation and leading Spanish winemaker, Marcus Eguren. Apart from the historical Sierra Cantabria winery, the Eguren family also owns equally prestigious wineries such as: Señorio de San Vicente in Rioja Alavesa, Dominio de Eguren in the Paganos province, and the more recent, Teso La Monja estate in Toro.
