Good to Know: The story of the Poderi Boscarelli state began in 1962 with founder Egidio Corradi’s dream of producing a noble wine that exalts the aromas and flavors of his native land while imparting the elegance he loved. Born into an old Poliziana family in the Montepulciano region of the Siena countryside, he later graduated with a degree in economics and business. He spent most of his life working as an international broker in Genoa and Milan.

But his infinite passion for wine and deep knowledge of his home region induced him to buy two semi-abandoned small farms in Cervognano of Montepulciano, a stunning corner of old Etruscan Tuscany. The ancient soils had long been cultivated in the traditional way with different annual crops and small vineyards.

Egidio’s dream and vision were embraced and invigorated by his daughter Paola and her husband Ippolito De Ferrari. Driven by their strong determination and dedication, they started Poderi Boscarelli in the ’60s. The development that followed brought renewed life to the age-old farming estate as Paola and Ippolito planted their first specialized vineyards at a density of 3,500 plants per hectare. They also built the first winery by renovating and adapting old stables.

The original spirit of the estate has now passed to the third generation of the family. Each day Luca and Nicolò De Ferrari, sons of Paola and Ippolito, bring that same passion to wine production as they work to infuse each bottle with the aromas and flavors that Grandpa Egidio loved and searched for. Luca and Nicolò reselect and replant vineyards that continue to express the scents and range of characteristics of the incredible land that nurtures them.

The Boscarelli Prugnolo Rosso di Montepulciano highlights the freshness of Sagiovese’s fruity notes and Mammolo’s spice. The selection process involves selecting the most perfume rich grapes and less-mature structure. This was started back in 1989 as Rosso di Montepulciano. The label stayed the same since 2003. Producer’s note – due to the vintage’s particular characteristic of freshness, it is best to drink the wine within 4 to 5 years from harvest.

The 2024 "Prugnolo" Rosso di Montepulciano showcases the fresher, more vibrant side of Boscarelli’s craftsmanship. Crafted from younger vines blending Sangiovese (Prugnolo Gentile) with a touch of aromatic Mammolo, this bottling bypasses heavy oak aging in favor of brief maturation in cement tanks to preserve pure fruit expression. Bright and pale ruby in color, the 2024 vintage bursts with lifted aromas of fresh raspberries, ripe redcurrants, and fragrant violet floral notes. It delivers a lively, supple palate with energetic acidity and gentle, smooth tannins, making it an exceptionally charming and approachable Tuscan red, best enjoyed in its youthful prime.
Thanks to its bright acidity, fruit-forward profile, and moderate weight, the 2024 Prugnolo is one of the most versatile and food-friendly wines in the Boscarelli lineup. It excels alongside everyday classic Italian fare like a rustic wood-fired Margherita pizza, tagliatelle Bolognese, or spaghetti al pomodoro. It is equally fantastic paired with roasted poultry dishes such as herb-crusted chicken, grilled pork chops, or a casual platter of young Pecorino Toscano and prosciutto. For best results, serve it with a slight cellar chill to enhance its crisp, refreshing character.
