Good To Know: Domaine Vietti, founded in 1873 by Carlo Vietti in Castiglione Falletto at the heart of Barolo, is one of Piedmont’s most respected wineries. Over generations, especially under the influence of Alfredo Currado in the mid-20th century, Vietti pioneered single-vineyard Barolo and helped revive the nearly extinct Arneis grape. The estate is also known for its Artist Labels, first introduced in 1974, which blend wine and contemporary art. Vietti Barolo Castiglione DOCG 2021 is a refined and expressive Nebbiolo crafted from over 15 parcels across the Barolo region, each contributing to its layered complexity. Fermented with native yeasts and a portion of whole clusters, then aged for around 30 months in a mix of large casks and some barriques, the wine reveals a translucent ruby hue and a vibrant bouquet of sour cherry, red currant, rose petals, and dried herbs, with hints of menthol and crushed stone emerging over time. On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with firm tannins and bright acidity, delivering flavors of plum, savory herbs, and smoky leather. Balancing elegance with structure, this Barolo offers early approachability with cellaring potential and remains a benchmark for quality and value in the appellation.
