Good to Know: The Domaine René Engel, situated in Vosne-Romanée within the esteemed wine-producing area of the Côte de Nuits in Burgundy, boasts a storied history that spans generations. Established in 1919 by the namesake René Engel, who later became a respected oenology professor at the University of Dijon and co-founder of the renowned Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin in 1934 alongside Jacques Prieur, the estate quickly gained renown for its exceptional wines. René's expertise and dedication to crafting high-quality wines, particularly the Vosne-Romanée appellations which are revered as some of the finest in the region, propelled the winery to success and enabled it to cultivate a distinct viticultural identity.
In 1949, Pierre Engel took over the family estate from his father René, who retired at that time. In the 1970s, Pierre fell seriously ill, leading to the neglect of the vineyard, which was on the verge of being abandoned. Tragically, Pierre passed away in 1981, five years before his father René. Following Pierre's death, Philippe Engel, René's grandson, assumed control of the family business. Thanks to Philippe's efforts, the Domaine René Engel experienced a revival, reclaiming its prominent status in the Burgundian wine industry.

It was a weekday when we went there so it was not crowded. The interiors were nicely done and an ideal for place to have a good discussion. We love the caviar bar and their cocktail offerings. Food was above average although can still be improved. We had the pork ribs, spicy sausage, pork croquet, and fish triperones(?).
